Since 1998, painter Charlise Tiee has been using oils to explore the ambiguities in representation of identity, specifically in regards to gender and ethnicity. Tiee combines traditional portraiture with identity politics in an attempt to understand where marginalized and displaced women fit into a greater American culture. Her paintings have been displayed throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
This is an online portfolio of Charlise Tiee's oil paintings from 1998-2003. The main focus of her work has been portraits, though she has explored still-life and figure painting as well. Fascinated by the drama of the human face and form, Tiee has of late been working on a rather small scale, painting the faces of both people around her and whatever images fall out of her head, so to speak. Her influences range from Rembrandt to Kahlo, and much of what she has learned comes from studying great paintings in various American and European museums.
